Welcome to The Romilly Quiz Website!
NO QUIZ SUNDAY 17th NOVEMBER DUE TO WALES v AUSTRALIA RUGBY – QUIZ RETURNS SUNDAY 24th NOVEMBER
If you’re looking for an easy quiz then this may not be for you! But, if you’re up for a challenge please come along…Get there early, as tables are taken very quickly these days & limited to only 15 teams!
IN THE INTEREST OF FAIRNESS & THE GOOGLING OF ANSWERS, THE USE OF MOBILE PHONES IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN DURING THE QUIZ, ANY TEAM FOUND CHEATING WILL BE DISQUALIFIED
Handicap System
In order to make the quiz more equitable for ALL teams there is a handicapping system for the general knowledge quiz winning teams.
Each week the highest scoring team for the general knowledge quiz will carry a FIVE-POINT deduction of their score for the next quiz they participate in. Should they remain the highest scoring team for a second consecutive time, then the handicap increases to TEN-POINTS, and so on, until they are no longer the highest scorers.
Once a winning team has played again and are NOT the highest scorers, then the handicap is removed. This I hope will ensure that no one team becomes dominant and continues to win week after week, opening up the quiz to new winners each week. N.B. (Changing a team name will NOT exempt a team from the handicap, nor will missing the next or subsequent quizzes) Please see RESULTS page for details of how it is applied.
The Quiz
For those who have not attended the quiz before, the Romilly Quiz is held in the lounge each Sunday evening (EXCEPT for Bank Holidays) from 8:30pm until 10:15pm.
There is a warm and friendly atmosphere with new players made to feel very welcome. The entry fee for the quiz is £1 per player (& has been since 2009), with no cap on the number of players in any one team. All teams taking part have to give themselves a suitable name. You will be competing against some of our resident teams such as Pic n’ Mix, Romilly Anomalies, Gremlins, Team Sookie, Drunkateers and The Less Eminent Victorians to name but a few. Our quiz is very much a fun quiz, but there is a very competitive element amongst some of the regular teams who enjoy a challenge, so a quiz of all easy questions is not an option. The general knowledge quiz is primarily aimed at the over 30’s but don’t let that deter you if you think you’re smarter than our over 40 year olds!!! As you can see from the results page, the winning teams usually answer more than 70% of the questions correctly.
The quiz itself is split into two halves with a picture and table quiz forming one part, with the winning team receiving a £20 prize. The other half of the quiz is a forty question general knowledge quiz, with around 25% of the questions being multiple choice. The quiz also contains a 10 question wipe-out round where incorrect answers can win or lose you the quiz. The winning team receives £25!
Halfway through the main general knowledge quiz (9:00pm) we have a ten minute break to allow you to refill your glasses etc. Players are also given the opportunity to buy ‘Snowball Question’ raffle tickets, at the end of the quiz, raffle tickets are drawn. The holders of successfully drawn tickets will be asked a question regarding an event in a particular year between 1900 and 2024, and if answered correctly, they win £50. Anyone who has a ‘Snowball Question’ ticket drawn wins £5 regardless whether they get the question right. Some examples of previous ‘Snowball Question’s’ can be found on this website along with some previous quizzes in the free quizzes section.
This is not a bought in mass produced quiz supplied to many other pubs and clubs, read by someone who has not prepared the questions being asked. I personally select and check the forty questions each week and prepare the picture and table quizzes.
For those of you unable to attend the quiz in person some of the questions & table quizzes are available for FREE via a download file on this website. For copyright purposes, the picture quiz is watermarked.
